Health and Safety policy
Bermondsey Removals Health and Safety Policy
Bermondsey Removals is committed to conducting all removal, packing and transport activities in a manner that safeguards the health, safety and welfare of our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public. This policy applies to all work carried out by Bermondsey Removals across homes, offices, storage facilities and other premises within our service area.
We recognise our legal and moral duties to manage risks arising from our operations and to continually improve our health and safety performance. All members of staff are expected to cooperate in implementing this policy and to ensure that health and safety considerations are integrated into daily working practices.
Policy Aims and Objectives
The aims of this Health and Safety Policy are to:
Promote a positive health and safety culture throughout Bermondsey Removals. Prevent accidents, work-related ill health and damage to property. Identify, assess and control risks associated with removal, packing, handling and transport activities. Provide appropriate information, instruction, supervision and training for all employees. Ensure safe systems of work for domestic and commercial moves. Comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised best practice in the removals industry.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management at Bermondsey Removals has overall responsibility for health and safety. This includes:
Setting clear health and safety objectives and ensuring adequate resources are provided to meet them. Ensuring that risk assessments are carried out and reviewed regularly for all key activities, including lifting, loading, driving, working at height and use of equipment. Making sure that vehicles, lifting aids and other equipment are suitable, properly maintained and inspected as required. Reviewing this policy periodically and updating it when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, operations or best practice.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for implementing safe working procedures on site and for monitoring that staff follow agreed methods of work.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee of Bermondsey Removals has a duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. All staff must:
Follow the training, information and safe systems of work provided. Use equipment, vehicles, tools and personal protective equipment correctly and only for their intended purpose. Report accidents, near misses, unsafe conditions or concerns to their supervisor without delay. Cooperate with management in carrying out risk assessments, safety inspections and investigations. Refrain from any behaviour that could compromise health and safety, including operating vehicles or machinery under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Bermondsey Removals carries out risk assessments for all significant hazards related to our services. These typically include manual handling of furniture and boxes, loading and unloading vehicles, navigating staircases and narrow access routes, working in customers premises, and driving activities throughout our operating areas.
Findings from these risk assessments are used to develop safe systems of work, including:
Planning moves in advance and assessing access routes, parking and loading areas. Using team lifting techniques and appropriate lifting aids to move heavy or awkward items. Applying protective coverings and stable stacking methods to minimise trip and crush risks. Managing vehicle loading to prevent overloading and to ensure secure distribution of weight. Implementing clear communication between team members during complex or high-risk tasks.
Training, Information and Supervision
All staff receive induction training that covers general health and safety responsibilities, emergency procedures and safe working practices specific to removal operations. Additional role-specific training is provided where required, such as manual handling, working safely at height, vehicle safety and use of specialist equipment.
Information about risks and safety measures is communicated through briefings, toolbox talks, written instructions and on-site supervision. New or less experienced employees are closely supervised until they are deemed competent to work more independently.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling injuries are a significant risk in removal work. Bermondsey Removals is committed to minimising this risk by:
Avoiding hazardous manual handling where possible through planning and use of equipment. Providing trolleys, dollies, lifting straps and other aids where appropriate. Training staff in safe lifting techniques, including team lifting and use of stable postures. Ensuring that items are dismantled into manageable components whenever reasonably practicable.
All equipment and vehicles used in the course of removal work will be maintained in good condition and used only by trained and authorised personnel.
Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety
Our vehicles are essential to providing removal services and must be operated safely at all times. Bermondsey Removals will:
Ensure that all drivers hold the appropriate licences and are medically fit to drive. Maintain vehicles through regular inspections, servicing and defect reporting. Plan routes to allow safe travel times, taking account of traffic and local conditions. Require drivers to comply with road traffic laws, speed limits and parking restrictions. Prohibit the use of handheld mobile phones while driving and discourage any form of distracted driving.
Customer and Public Safety
We recognise our responsibility to protect customers and members of the public while carrying out removal work in residential streets, commercial districts and shared access areas. Our teams will:
Set up work areas to minimise obstruction and maintain safe access routes. Use safe lifting and carrying methods to avoid loss of control of loads. Communicate clearly with customers about any temporary restrictions or hazards during the move. Take care to protect customers property and common areas from damage that could create slip, trip or fall risks.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported and recorded. Bermondsey Removals will investigate incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Emergency procedures are in place for fire, serious injury, vehicle incidents and other foreseeable emergencies. Staff are briefed on these procedures and on how to summon assistance when needed.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
Bermondsey Removals values the input of employees in improving health and safety. We encourage open communication about hazards, suggestions for safer methods of work and feedback on existing procedures.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains suitable, effective and aligned with the scale and nature of our removals activities. Updates are communicated to all staff, and additional training is provided where changes affect working practices.
By working together and maintaining a strong safety culture, Bermondsey Removals aims to provide a safe and reliable removal service for customers throughout our operating areas.
